During his life, Zen Master Hughes has a teacher to many people
seeking enlightenment and relief from suffering. From a Buddhist
position of peacefulness and non-violence he has contributed to the
safety of the community through his security work. He has passed on
lessons on meditation to countless of his followers and has led,
through the example of his life and teaching, many who seek to know
more of the Buddhist faith.
Overview
Master Hughes is an American citizen, born in Texas in 1956. Still a
resident of Jacksonville, Texas, he is widely recognised as the
leading Zen Master in the state, and set up the National Meditation
Center for World Peace. Buddhists from as far afield as India seek
his advice on meditation and Buddhism – including the Hazrat
Mohammad and Maha Bodi Society. Master Hughes’s expertise on
security matters and in the treatment of those with Post Traumatic
Stress, are much sought after. His humanitarian work, throughout his
life, has led to many commendations and awards. Master Hughes
practices Buddhism through his life’s work, and is much revered for
his grace and gentleness. He is a totally engaged Buddhist, who
values actions over opinions.
Zen Master
The Venerable Master Hughes, or Roshi, is a highly respected Zen
Master and is widely recognized for his work in the field of
meditation practice and teaching, at which he is a Master, and has
particular skill in Asian Meditation. He was the first Buddhist
Master to be recognized in north east Texas, and has received much
media coverage regarding his practice, and the setting up of the
National Meditation Centre for World Peace. Although he is widely
regarded as the leading Zen Master in the United States, he lives a
quiet and retiring life when he is not required to lecture or lead,
and likes to spend time visiting temples, meeting other
practitioners or continuing his humanitarian work at the Centre.
Humanitarian Work
Master Hughes has a long history of working with disadvantaged and
disaffected young people. He is not afraid to engage with those with
a history of violence and from poor, deprived backgrounds. He has
extensive expertise in training humanitarian workers, and law
enforcement officers, in effective traumatic stress approaches, and
anti-violence programs. He developed a radical new form of traumatic
stress training that utilizes the teaching of Zen to empower victims
to regain their lives. Master Hughes has worked with trauma victims
and crisis centres, giving training in his technique. He has also
held certification as a Traumatic Stress Responder.
Master Hughes has witnessed and campaigned against child slavery in
the Philippines.
Teaching and Work Activities
The Venerable Master Hughes was originally a graduate from
University of Texas, where he achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in
Criminology and a Masters degree in Technology Training and
Education. Master Hughes has lectured at many institutions,
including the Killeen Leadership Academy and the University of
Texas. As a lifelong advocate for non-violence and peace he utilises
his Buddhist beliefs by sitting on security committees, and training
executives in security and safety procedures. Well known for his
expertise in programming, his innovative leadership skills and
lecturing style, he is a popular speaker.
Martial Arts
Master Hughes is a Grand Master of the Martial arts, and his martial
arts career has spanned 30 years. International martial artists have
come from all over to meet him and discuss his Martial Arts
practice. Master Hughes has studied Karate Tae Kwon Do, Judo and
Jiu-jitsu, having been originally certified by a Korean Master.
Recognition
- In 2005 by the Texas Legislature for his invaluable
contributions, an accolade which states: “WHEREAS, Master M J
Hughes has greatly contributed to the quality of life in
Cherokee County, and his efforts are truly admirable.”
- He has also been recognized by Governor Perry's office for
his "commitment and generosity to community in the Lone star
State".
- In 2006 Master Hughes work was recognized by United States
Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime.
- In 2007 Master Hughes was also recognized by Senator
Nichols, by State Representative Chuck Hopson for his leadership
and work in rural and community development, by Congressman Jeb
Henserling for his involvement in Humanitarian causes and by
Senator Cornyn.
